Petrified Forest and Painted Desert

The painted desert gets its name from the brightly colored layers of red sandstone mixed in with layers of gray on a backdrop of light green desert brush. After endless miles of barren desert, this is quite a site to behold. This area was also settled by several different native tribes over the centuries. One of those tribes, the Puerco Pueblo (ca. 1200 - 1300 AD), left a series of pictographs. The purpose of many of them are not known but several have been found to correspond with seasonal events such as the solstices and equinoxes.
